McConkey Injured in Cardinals Loss
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey is day to day after suffering a rib injury. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the news on Monday. McConkey was a bright spot for the team during their 26-14 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
He had five catches for 82 yards before the injury. In the third quarter, McConkey tried to make a leaping catch in the middle of the field. Linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. delivered a heavy hit, leaving McConkey in significant pain. He left the game and did not return.
Quarterback Justin Herbert praised the receiver after the match. "Ladd's a really good football player," Herbert said after the game. "We're really glad to have him, and he made a ton of plays today, so I'm hoping he feels better."
Offense Struggles and More Injuries
The Chargers offense fell apart after McConkey left. They trailed by only two points when he exited, but they failed to score again. Their final four drives were ruined by penalties, and Herbert was sacked twice more, bringing his total to three sacks on the day.
The Chargers are facing other injury problems too. Safety Elijah Molden has a hamstring issue and wide receiver Derius Davis has an undisclosed injury. Both are considered day to day. Wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss some time.
With several receivers hurt, rookie Brenen Thompson could get more playing time. Thompson was a fourth round pick who had a strong training camp. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel was very keen on him during the draft, telling general manager Joe Hortiz he would take his shirt off if they drafted him. Thompson has great speed, running a 4.26 40 yard dash at the combine, and led the SEC with 1,054 receiving yards at Mississippi State last season. He played only ten snaps on Sunday and was not targeted.
