A difficult night in Lisbon

Celtic suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Benfica in the Europa League. The loss leaves Celtic with no points from six matches in the league phase. Colombia striker Jhon Durán opened the scoring with a penalty after five minutes following a foul by Dane Murray.

Alexander Bah added a second midway through the first half. Jhon Durán scored his second goal in the 35th minute to put Benfica further ahead. Celtic struggled defensively during the opening period and found themselves trailing significantly before the interval.

Second-half response pleases manager

Celtic improved after the break and reduced the deficit through Camilo Durán in the 63rd minute. Manager Martin O'Neill praised the second-half display despite the final scoreline. He told TNT Sports that the team created chance after chance and could have scored more goals.

Benfica substitute Vangelis Pavlidis added a fourth goal with two minutes remaining. O'Neill pointed out that the performance after the break gave him belief that the team can still qualify for the knockout stages, despite the poor start to the competition.
