Record breaking night in Chicago

Cavan Sullivan made more history on Wednesday night. The Philadelphia Union midfielder picked up his 14th assist of the season to set up Bruno Damiani in a 3-1 victory at Chicago Fire FC. Sullivan turned 17 last month.

Together with his seven goals, Sullivan now has 21 goal contributions in his breakout year. This is the most ever by a teenager in a single MLS season. His 14 assists put him second in the league, level with Lionel Messi and behind only Son Heung-Min. Sullivan also has a goal contribution in 10 straight MLS games.

Self critical star

Sullivan was in a less than celebratory mood after the match. He broke the mark for most goal contributions for a player under 17, besting a record previously set by Freddy Adu.

I played sort of terrible tonight, so I am not really focused on any records or stats like that, to be honest, Sullivan said. I am happy with the win, but I have sort of got to look in the mirror.

Union interim coach Ryan Richter was more positive. Richter noted that Sullivan continues to be decisive in games and makes the difference.

Team form and future

Sullivan has carried Philadelphia to eight straight wins and a club record 14 match unbeaten streak. The team moved up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference with five games remaining. Sullivan has an agreement to join Manchester City when he turns 18.

He also recently became the youngest player to start a game for the United States men's national team since Adu. Sullivan followed that up by becoming the youngest scorer ever for the national team with a long range goal against Mexico.
