A strange play in St. Petersburg

New York Yankees rookie Spencer Jones found himself in a bizarre situation on Monday night. Playing in Game 2 of the American League Division Series at Tropicana Field, Jones hit a towering flyball in the second inning that struck one of the metal rings high above the field.

How the catch happened

Jones kept running around the bases while the ball rattled off the catwalk and fell toward the turf. Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Jonny DeLuca thought he was camped under it, but he started pointing upward when the ball hit the structure. Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. ran over and caught the ball several feet in front of DeLuca.

Umpires make the call

The umpires conferred after the play and confirmed it was an out, following the stadium ground rules. This incident marked the second time a roof structure impacted a postseason game recently, following a similar roof hit during a game between Milwaukee and San Diego on Saturday night.
