Bears Face Quarterback Shortage

The Chicago Bears are dealing with a major quarterback crisis ahead of their Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Starter Caleb Williams is sidelined with a hamstring injury, and backup Tyson Bagent is in the concussion protocol. This leaves 38 year old veteran Case Keenum as the only active quarterback who practiced on Wednesday.

Undrafted rookie Miller Moss took backup reps during the session. Bagent was hurt during Monday's game after being tackled by Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. Williams is currently week to week, but coach Ben Johnson has not officially ruled him out yet. Still, the Bears do not plan to sign another quarterback right now.

Veteran Ready for the Challenge

Keenum is a 15 year NFL journeyman who has not started a regular season game since 2023, when he played for the Houston Texans. Usually restricted to mental reps in practice, he is now working directly with the starters. Despite the sudden shift, Keenum feels ready to play if the team needs him.

"If my name's called, I'm excited to be out there," Keenum said. He added that he feels mentally sharp and can draw on his years of experience to run the offense smoothly.

Experience and Coaching Trust

If Keenum does start, he brings plenty of experience. He has played for eight different teams since entering the league in 2012. He has 66 career starts, including two in the playoffs, and has thrown for 15,175 yards and 79 touchdowns. Interestingly, he holds a 3-0 record as a starter against Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Coach Ben Johnson has high praise for the veteran. Keenum actually came out of retirement in 2025 to sign a two year, $5.5 million deal with Chicago because of his strong relationship with Johnson. The coach believes Keenum's quick decision making and experience will help the team.
