Keenum Set to Lead the Offense
The Chicago Bears are preparing to start veteran quarterback Case Keenum for their upcoming Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 38 year old signal caller was the only quarterback on Chicago's 53 man roster to practice every single day leading into the Week 3 matchup.
While Keenum is expected to take the field as the starter, the Bears received some good news regarding their quarterback depth. Tyson Bagent has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and does not carry an injury designation into the game. However, Bagent is still expected to serve as the backup to Keenum against the Eagles.
Bagent Clears Concussion Protocol
Bagent was back on the practice field on Saturday, where he was a full participant. This was a positive step for the quarterback, who had missed the Bears' prior two practice sessions due to his head injury.
The Bears state that the 26 year old backup sustained his concussion on just his second play of the game when he came on in relief of Caleb Williams. This happened during Chicago's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. After Bagent threw a short pass to his left that fell incomplete, he was driven hard to the turf by Minnesota outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.
Williams Sidelined With Hamstring Injury
The quarterback shuffle became necessary after starter Caleb Williams was officially ruled out for the Monday night game. Williams is dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain that he suffered in the previous game.
The injury is expected to keep Williams sidelined for three to four weeks. This means Keenum will have to guide the team through a difficult stretch, starting with the Philadelphia Eagles. Having Bagent healthy and ready on the sideline provides some relief for the Chicago coaching staff, but Keenum's experience will be the main focus on Monday night.
