Wentz takes the start
Carson Wentz will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed the lineup move on Friday.
Starting quarterback Kyler Murray is continuing his recovery from a concussion suffered during the Week 1 win against the Green Bay Packers. The injury happened on the eleventh play of Murray's debut with the team at the end of a third down scramble. He went down after taking a hit from Packers defensive end Lukas Van Ness and safety Javon Bullard.
Teammates saw Murray showing a fencing posture immediately after the hit, which is a common sign of head trauma. He managed to walk off the field on his own and spoke with coaches and teammates in the locker room after the game. Murray participated in all three practice sessions this week, but the coaching staff chose to give him extra time to get fully healthy.
Depth pays off for Minnesota
This change marks the eleventh time the Vikings have switched starting quarterbacks during a season across O'Connell's five year tenure. Many of those changes happened due to injuries, such as the issues suffered by Kirk Cousins in 2023 and J.J. McCarthy in 2025.
Wentz started five games in place of McCarthy last season, recording a 2-3 record before having season ending surgery on his left shoulder. Minnesota brought Wentz back in March, just one week after signing Murray, to keep reliable depth in the quarterback room. Murray won the starting role over McCarthy in training camp, while O'Connell kept Wentz as the backup because of his veteran experience.
That preparation showed in Week 1. After replacing Murray, Wentz completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns to help secure the win.
