Carrick Apologises After Como Humiliation
Michael Carrick apologized to Manchester United fans after his side suffered a painful 4-1 defeat to Como in Italy on Wednesday. The 45 year old manager is currently battling to save his job following a difficult period for the club.
Despite the poor result away from home, Carrick maintains that he trusts his players completely. He promised supporters that the team will show a completely different reaction when Bournemouth arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday.
"I definitely trust them, yeah, 100% I trust them," Carrick said when speaking about his squad. He admitted that it was not a good night at all in Italy for many reasons, but stressed that his players must show a reaction immediately.
Address Over Tactics And Player Effort
United have received plenty of criticism this season over a perceived lack of effort, with several opponents out-running them during matches.
The issue came to light after captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned Carrick's tactics following the defeat in Italy. Carrick responded by noting that any team that fails to run forward and back will not win matches.
However, speaking to reporters on Friday, Carrick insisted that a lack of running or pressing is not the primary reason behind their recent slump in form. He stated that people must be careful when blaming running statistics for bad results.
Returning To Last Season Standards
Carrick explained that pressing is not always mandatory to win a football match. He noted that running statistics do not always define the outcome of a game, calling it a phrase that simply gets thrown about.
Instead, the United boss emphasized the need for his team to get back to the basic principles that served them well during the previous campaign. He believes the squad needs to focus on returning to their best form rather than focusing solely on work rate metrics.
