Pressure Builds on Carrick
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is facing a difficult balancing act ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton. The pressure is growing on Carrick after a tough start to the season. United have won just two of their first five games in all competitions, picking up only four points from four matches in the Premier League.
A recent 1-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City has added to the tension. Carrick needs a positive result to steady the ship, but he also wants to keep his squad fresh. "It is important for us to win football matches, and it is important that we manage the squad as well," Carrick said.
Squad Rotation and Injury Updates
Several fresh players could enter the starting lineup for the cup tie. Andrey Santos, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount, Benjamin Sesko, Shea Lacey, and Karl Darlow are all options to start against Brighton.
However, Carrick has some injury concerns to manage. Defender Luke Shaw has missed the last two matches after coming off in the 2-2 draw against Everton. Carrick said Shaw could possibly be fit for Brighton, but it is not clear cut. There is debate over whether United have a suitable backup for the defender, who is 31 years old.
Meanwhile, Amad remains sidelined with a back injury that has kept him out since November. Carrick noted that Amad is "not quite close" to returning yet. Defender Matthijs de Ligt is also working his way back to fitness, and Carrick does not want to put a specific timeframe on his return.
