Carragher Demands Exit
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Manchester City's owners must sell the club. This demand comes after an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
The commission ruled that City inflated their revenue and hid costs using sham commercial deals over a nine-season period. Carragher wrote that the Abu Dhabi era at Manchester City is at an end. He believes the club can only recover once the current owners recognize their failure and sell up.
According to Carragher, the scale of what he called institutional cheating means the positions of all involved executives are untenable. He warned that fighting the ruling will only prolong the agony for the club's supporters.
Concerns Over Owner Exit
Not everyone agrees that the owners should leave. Andy Burnham expressed concern about losing the owners who have invested heavily since 2008. Burnham noted that the owners have been a huge partner in building modern Manchester and turning the club into a global force.
Meanwhile, David Kogan, the chair of the Independent Football Regulator, said the ruling raises serious issues. Kogan pointed out that the regulator has the power to assess whether club owners and executives are suitable once all legal proceedings end.
Carragher insisted that the rules must be upheld. He stated that anyone who breaks the fundamental rules must be disqualified from being Premier League directors and owners, or the regulations are useless.
City and Guardiola Respond
Manchester City have made it clear they intend to appeal the decision. The club's main sponsor, Etihad Airways, also released a statement saying it is looking at its legal options following the commission's ruling.
Former manager Pep Guardiola has publicly backed the club. Guardiola, who won six Premier League titles before leaving last season, shared his support on social media.
Guardiola wrote that he is behind the club, the owner, the chairman, the players, and the fans. He added that they will get through this situation together.
