Damien Lewis sidelined with elbow injury
The Carolina Panthers have received some bad news about their offensive line. Starting left guard Damien Lewis is set to miss a few weeks after suffering a UCL injury in his elbow. The injury has been described as a tear, and medical evaluations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.
Lewis picked up the injury during the first half of Sunday's 21-18 loss against the Cleveland Browns. Although he managed to return to the field in the third quarter to finish the game, he will now have to spend some time on the sidelines to recover.
The timing of the injury is slightly cushioned by the Panthers' upcoming schedule. Lewis will definitely miss Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. However, Carolina has a bye week in Week 5, so there is a chance he might only miss one game before he is ready to play again.
Growing injury concerns for Carolina
Losing Lewis is a major hit for the Panthers' offense. He has been one of the team's best performing offensive linemen through the first three games of the season.
His absence leaves the Panthers in a difficult position as they try to rebuild their line. Left tackle Rasheed Walker, who joined the team on a one-year deal in March, has had a challenging time during his three games played. Meanwhile, rookie Monroe Freeling is currently playing on the right side of the line.
The Panthers are also dealing with several other major injuries across the squad. Top cornerback Jaycee Horn is out indefinitely after tearing his quad during the Week 3 loss to the Browns. On a more positive note, veteran tackles Taylor Moton, who has been out with a blood clot, and Ikem Ekwonu, who is recovering from a patellar tendon injury, are both eligible to return to action after the bye week.
