Evero Fired Following Green Bay Defeat
The Carolina Panthers have made a change to their coaching staff. On Friday, the team announced the firing of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. The decision came right after Carolina suffered a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Thursday night.
Evero leaves his position after 59 games in charge, leaving 10 matches remaining on the schedule this season. Passing game coordinator Jonathon Cooley was also let go alongside Evero. The pair previously won a Super Bowl together as assistant coaches with the Los Angeles Rams.
Struggles Against The Run Cost Evero His Job
Poor run defense was a main reason for the dismissal. Through seven games this season, Carolina ranked 30th in rushing defense and 23rd in total defense, though they were ninth in passing defense. In Thursday's game against Green Bay, the unit gave up 354 net yards and four touchdowns.
Run defense issues have affected Evero throughout his tenure in Carolina. He took charge of the defense in 2023, before coach Dave Canales was hired in 2024. Although his first unit finished fourth in total defense, it became the first defense since 1980 to give up 3,000 rushing yards in one season. Since 2024, Evero's defense has allowed 200 or more rushing yards in 12 games. That is six more times than any other team in the league.
Todd Wash Takes Control Of Carolina Defense
The 2026 season started with mixed results for the 45 year old coordinator. The team added safety Tre'von Moehrig in free agency and picked outside linebackers Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen in the draft. The defense held star running backs Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs to low numbers in wins against the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions. However, poor games against the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cleveland Browns forced management to act.
Defensive line coach Todd Wash takes over as interim defensive coordinator for the rest of the season. Wash joined Carolina alongside Evero and previously served as the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2020. In 2017, Wash led a Jaguars defense that ranked second in the league and reached the AFC Championship Game.
