Focusing on the season

Former Knicks star Carmelo Anthony believes the team made the right call by stopping contract negotiations with players to concentrate entirely on basketball.

With Karl Anthony Towns and Josh Hart eligible for extensions, talks stalled. The Knicks announced they were pausing discussions until later in the season. They want to put all their attention toward defending their NBA championship.

Anthony spoke about the situation while preparing for his second season as an analyst for NBC Sports. He said he was not alarmed by the recent developments.

Contract status of key players

Towns is eligible for a four year extension. He is due to make $57 million this season and has a player option for the 2027 to 2028 season.

Towns admitted that the team statement regarding the halt in negotiations was news to him and expressed disappointment in the progress.

Hart is set to make $21 million this season with a team option for 2027 to 2028. Hart said he was not frustrated, though he previously mentioned how stalled talks could affect players around the trade deadline in February.
