Standing Firm on the Field
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is refusing to cover up the logo on his custom footwear. The league has already issued warnings and fined him a total of $35,823 over the past two weeks.
Williams wears Caddix cleats, a brand that is not on the list of approved manufacturers. League rules allow players to display logos from Adidas, Nike, and Under Armour. Players can wear other brands, but they must tape over or spat the unapproved logos. Williams has refused to cover his.
Focus on Safety and Principle
A person close to the quarterback explained that Williams is acting out of principle. He believes the footwear is safer for his body and wants to spread awareness about it.
The Caddix brand uses special technology designed to reduce rotational torque on the foot, knees, and ankles. The company claims this leads to fewer injuries. Around 40 other players across the league also use these cleats.
Caddix Chief Executive Officer Jack Rasmussen stated that his company cannot tell players how to wear their gear. He added that he could not explain why Williams will not put tape over the logo.
Organic Relationship and Fines
Neither Williams nor his father Carl are investors or representatives for Caddix. The partnership began naturally last year when his quarterback trainer contacted the company. Rasmussen met Williams in Jacksonville to design a pair that matched his specific needs.
Other people connected to the brand are stepping up to help. Player Joe Flacco, who is an investor in Caddix, and Rasmussen have both offered to pay the fines racked up by Williams.
Echoes of Bears History
This standoff brings back memories of former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon. During the 1985 season, McMahon was fined $5,000 by league commissioner Pete Rozelle for wearing an unapproved headband. McMahon responded the following week by wearing a headband featuring the name of the commissioner.
Williams is now continuing his own standoff over his footwear. Time will tell if he keeps wearing the uncovered logo in upcoming games.
