Williams sidelined with hamstring damage
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has suffered a Grade 2 hamstring injury. League sources say doctors estimate this type of injury usually takes three to four weeks to heal.
The Bears have already ruled Williams out for their Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. The team has tried to keep the details of the injury quiet to maintain a competitive advantage.
However, head coach Ben Johnson described the test results as somewhat encouraging. Johnson also stated the team is calling Williams week-to-week, noting that the quarterback has a history of returning faster than expected.
Old scar tissue causing severe pain
Williams suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of Chicago's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He went down in pain during a non-contact play and had to be carted off the field.
The quarterback previously injured the same hamstring during his college career. Part of the severe pain he felt was likely due to old scar tissue breaking up. While this experience is very painful, it does not cause long-term damage.
If Williams misses three weeks, he will sit out games against the Eagles, the New York Jets, and the Green Bay Packers. The Bears did not place him on injured reserve, which suggests they hope he can return for their Week 6 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Chicago search for a starting quarterback
With Williams out, the Bears have a major decision to make for Monday night. Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent reported concussion symptoms on Tuesday and entered the league protocol.
Bagent is officially listed as questionable for the game, though he did participate fully in Saturday's practice. If Bagent cannot play, 38-year-old third-string quarterback Case Keenum will get the start. Keenum has not started a game since the 2023 season with the Houston Texans.
Coach Johnson said the team is still figuring out the depth chart and who will start against the Eagles. He noted that both backup options are smart players who will be mentally prepared for the challenge.
