Fines From the League

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams received two fines from the league for wearing unauthorized footwear during games. The first fine arrived after a game against the Atlanta Falcons, and a second fine followed after a game against the New England Patriots.

The footwear is made by Caddix, a start-up company. While the brand passed testing and is approved as non-licensed footwear, companies must pay millions of dollars to have their logos visible on the field. Only Nike, Adidas and Under Armour currently have that right.

Why Williams Wears Them

Williams does not have an endorsement deal with Caddix, but he chose to wear their cleats because of comfort. He stated that his feet, ankles and knees used to hurt when wearing footwear in the past, but the Caddix design makes a positive difference for his joints.

Tom Gormely, the longtime quarterbacks coach for Williams, learned about the start-up and vetted the technology. The cleats use moveable tips designed to help prevent injury by reducing rotational torque transmitted through the foot into the knees and ankles.

Calming Things Down

Williams previously stated he planned to keep wearing the shoes with visible branding, but he changed his mind for a game against the Seattle Seahawks. He wore matte black cleats without the visible logo in order to calm things down for his team. The Bears went on to win the game 34-17.

Caddix founder Jack Rasmussen and company investor Joe Flacco expressed willingness to pay the fines. Meanwhile, all 32 NFL teams have purchased at least one run of the cleats for their equipment managers to hand out.
