A Late Kick Seals Chicago Victory

Chicago Bears kicker Cairo Santos made a career long 58 yard field goal on Thursday night to secure a 30-24 victory against the New England Patriots. The kick gave Chicago its fifth win of the season and marked the third longest field goal in Soldier Field history.

Despite the successful finish, Santos was frustrated after missing a 53 yard attempt earlier in the fourth quarter. That kick hit the right upright, ending a 13 play drive that lasted nearly seven minutes. Santos admitted after the game that the missed kicks annoy him because he feels he is hitting the ball well.

How Santos Earned His Redemption Shot

The winning opportunity came after quarterback Caleb Williams took a 10 yard sack on third down at the Patriots 30 yard line. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore was injured on the play. Bears head coach Ben Johnson initially considered sending out the punt team, but he checked with Santos during the timeout.

Santos told special teams coordinator Richard Hightower that he wanted the attempt. Johnson trusted his kicker and gave him the green light. Santos delivered, sending the 58 yard kick through the uprights before being mobbed by his teammates in the south end zone.

Staying Confident After Recent Misses

Santos finished the game making three of his four field goal attempts alongside three extra points. He opened the scoring with a 43 yard field goal on the first drive and added a 31 yard kick in the second quarter. He is now 11 for 15 on field goals this season.

Before Week 7, Santos had missed field goals in back to back games, including a 56 yard attempt in Atlanta and a 43 yard attempt in Green Bay. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, who coached Santos with the Titans in 2019, said he was proud of his former player. Williams also praised Santos for his consistency, noting that the entire team has complete confidence in him.
