Bulls and Hornets Agree Big Trade
The Chicago Bulls are sending young guard Rob Dillingham to the Charlotte Hornets. In return, the Bulls will get veteran sharpshooter Buddy Hield and cash.
Dillingham is only 21 years old and was the number 8 pick in the 2024 NBA draft. He is on the move again less than a year after he joined Chicago at the trade deadline last season. During his short time with the Bulls, he played in 30 games, averaging 9.6 points and 2.8 assists.
Fresh Start for Dillingham
Dillingham could get a much bigger role with his new team. The Hornets recently traded their longtime starting guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This opening in the backcourt gives the young player a great chance to establish himself.
The Hornets also need extra depth right now. Just one day before this trade, the team announced that second year guard Kon Knueppel is out with a hamstring injury. Charlotte also gets a 9.4 million dollar trade exception from this deal.
Hield Joins the Bulls
Buddy Hield is moving to Chicago after a very brief stay in Charlotte. The Hornets had just acquired him from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Dorian Finney Smith. In fact, Hield spent less than a week with the Hornets before being traded again.
Hield is known as a positive and energetic player. He already has a connection in Chicago, as he has history with Bulls executive vice president Bryson Graham from their time together with New Orleans.
Future Contract Situations
The trade also has interesting contract implications for both teams. Dillingham has one more year left on his rookie contract through a team option. After that, he will head into restricted free agency in the summer of 2028.
Meanwhile, Hield has a player option worth around 10 million dollars for the 2027 to 2028 season. Both teams will hope these moves help them build for the future.
