Mayfield Set For Practice Return
Buccaneers starting quarterback Baker Mayfield will return to practice this week for the first time since suffering a dislocated right thumb. Coach Todd Bowles confirmed that Mayfield is supposed to practice on Wednesday.
Bowles stated that the team will take a good look at him there, and then evaluate him during the week to see how he does. The expectation was always that Mayfield would miss a minimum of three weeks after getting hurt in Week 3. He required stitches initially but did not need surgery, and an MRI showed no microfractures, tendon, or ligament damage.
Gripping The Ball Is The Main Test
Mayfield has entered the early part of a potential window to return. People close to the situation say the key will be how well he is able to grip the football over the course of an entire game.
It is not just about gripping the ball, but also securing it, while pain is not currently an issue. Before his injury, Mayfield struggled in three games, throwing two touchdowns with a third on the ground, two interceptions, and three lost fumbles. He was also sacked 13 times.
Preparing With Jalon Daniels
As the team gets ready for the Panthers, Bowles explained why the squad will prepare as if rookie Jalon Daniels will make his fourth straight start. Both quarterbacks will be in the meetings while the week progresses.
Daniels secured the Buccaneers their first victory of the season against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5. However, he threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter during a 26-19 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
