Strong third quarter secures victory

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into halftime trailing by three points against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. They then exploded in the third quarter for 17 points to take an 11-point lead en route to a 24-16 win on the road. Inside linebacker Alex Anzalone picked off quarterback Dak Prescott with 1.22 to go to preserve the first win of the season. The Bucs had not won a Thursday night road game since Oct. 14, 2021, at the Philadelphia Eagles when Tom Brady was the quarterback. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels made his second straight start as quarterback while Baker Mayfield recovers from a dislocated right thumb that he suffered in Week 3.

Daniels completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 passing yards and a touchdown. His arm also came alive with the deep ball, connecting with wide receiver Tez Johnson on a corner route for a 64-yard reception. Running back Bucky Irving delivered a 72-yard rush, which was the longest of his career and the longest by a Buccaneer since Ronald Jones II had a 98-yard run in Week 10 of the 2020 season.

Cowboys struggle after strong start

The Dallas Cowboys suffered one of their worst losses in recent memory. The Buccaneers entered the game with an 0-4 record, started an undrafted rookie quarterback, and missed one of their best defenders in Antoine Winfield Jr. An offense that wants to be called the Greatest Offense There Is was inept after the first drive. After a 70-yard touchdown drive to open the game, the next seven drives for Dallas gained 152 yards as a 10-7 lead turned into a 24-10 deficit in the third quarter.

The defense was shredded once again. For the 12th straight time, dating back to last year, the Cowboys allowed 20 or more points in a game, matching a team record. Through five games, Javonte Williams has six rushing touchdowns, capping the only first-quarter drive for Dallas with a 1-yard run.
