Time for a Change
Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimarães has admitted that his penalty technique is not working anymore. The Brazilian player confirmed that he must change how he takes spot kicks after recent struggles for both club and country.
His stutter step style has come under scrutiny recently. Last week, a missed penalty from Guimarães resulted in Arsenal losing a Carabao Cup shootout against League Two side Fleetwood Town. This miss added to an alarming run of form, as he has now missed three of his last four penalties.
Learning From Recent Failures
Guimarães explained that his penalty record was very strong before the World Cup. However, using the same style at the tournament and at Arsenal has not produced good results lately. He acknowledged that he has not been able to deliver at his usual level.
The midfielder said he is humble enough to admit his recent penalty kicks have not been good. He believes he needs to mature through his mistakes and learn from them. He stated that he has already decided not to continue taking penalties the way he was before.
Putting in the Work
To get ready for his next chance, Guimarães is focusing heavily on practice. He now takes at least three or four penalty kicks during every training session. He wants to make sure he puts in the work so he feels prepared when the moment comes.
The Brazilian explained that he cannot let his teammates or the fans down again. He noted that even global stars like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé missed penalties at the World Cup. For Guimarães, the goal is to work harder so he does not waste the next opportunity.
Moving On to the Next Match
With another match coming up this Sunday, Guimarães is focused on keeping a positive mindset. He said that if he lets the recent misses get to him, things will only spiral downward. Instead, he wants to turn things around quickly.
He stressed that these penalty struggles do not change who he is as a person or as a footballer. For now, his focus remains on training differently and preparing for the next time he steps up to take a spot kick.
