Carrick drops Fernandes to the bench

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been named on the bench for the home match against Bournemouth. Defender Harry Maguire was selected as captain in his place for the Sunday fixture.

The benching follows public comments made by Fernandes after United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday. The midfielder voiced disappointment with tactical instructions that told players not to press their opponent.

Carrick defends his selection choice

Michael Carrick offered a direct reply to the comments. He stated, "If you don't run, and you don't run forward, and you don't run back, you aren't going to win."

After revealing the team lineup, Carrick described the decision as "pure football." He added, "It's always a difficult decision. We have to make what we feel is the right one for the team to get the performance that we want." On Friday, when asked if he would drop Fernandes, Carrick said only that he would "do what's best for the football club."

Martinez fitness and past incidents

Carrick also stated that Lisandro Martínez was not fit enough to start the match. The defender previously avoided being benched despite publicly criticizing director of football Jason Wilcox and the board.

Martínez offered an apology and received a fine for those statements. He then started the following match against Leeds United, though he was taken off at half time due to an injury.
