Fernandes returns to lead United
Bruno Fernandes has returned to the Manchester United starting lineup for their Premier League match against Chelsea. The Portugal midfielder will wear the captain armband at Stamford Bridge after a recent fallout with manager Michael Carrick.
Fernandes was left on the bench during United defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend. Harry Maguire was handed the captain armband in his absence. Carrick has recalled Fernandes after the pair held clear the air talks following criticism from the player regarding tactics at United.
Changes in the lineup and squad backing
Carrick has reshuffled his team for the match against Chelsea. Lisandro Martínez comes into the starting lineup to replace Ayden Heaven in defence. Matheus Cunha gets the nod ahead of Mason Mount, while Fernandes takes the spot of Youri Tielemans.
Despite the recent friction, members of the squad have shown support for their manager. Tielemans stated that the squad does not want a big change at the club. Maguire also confirmed that the players are fully behind Carrick. The manager admitted he was not surprised to remain in charge for this fixture, as he keeps the faith of the club hierarchy.
Recent form causes concern
Manchester United enter this game needing to turn around a difficult run of results. The team has failed to win in eight of their last games across all competitions. That run includes five defeats and three draws.
Their last victory came on September 1, when they earned three points against Sabah in the Champions League. United will hope that bringing Fernandes back into the starting lineup helps them break this poor run.
