Browns Celebrate 5-2 Start But Worry Over Slow Quarters

The Cleveland Browns have won five of their first seven games through late heroics, but they know they must fix their slow starts.

Late Heroics Keep Cleveland Winning

The Cleveland Browns are finding ways to win even when things look tough early. In their latest game against the Tennessee Titans, the team fell behind by 14 points in the first quarter. They fought back, and kicker Andre Szmyt scored the game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired to secure a 27-24 victory.

This marks the fifth game-winning drive of the season for Cleveland, which leads the NFL in that category. The win lifted the AFC North leaders to a 5-2 record for the first time since 2020. Cornerback Denzel Ward joked about the close finishes after the match. He mentioned that the dramatic endings boost television ratings, but admitted the team needs to avoid mistakes early so they do not rely on last-second heroics.

Offensive Progress Shows Signs of Life

Despite the positive record, the offense has struggled for large parts of the season, averaging only 19 points per game. However, the recent match against Tennessee brought encouraging signs of growth. Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw for 308 yards, marking his first 300-yard passing game with the team, and the offense racked up a season-high 491 total yards.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken praised the quarterback's poise during the game. The return of running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson from injury also boosted the running game, helping the team register a season-high 183 rushing yards. Monken noted that running the ball better makes a huge difference for the squad.

Youthful Squad Builds Chemistry

Cleveland features one of the youngest teams in the NFL, yet players have shown impressive composure in tight moments. Rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion, who recorded 152 scrimmage yards against Tennessee, credited practice routines for the team's late-game confidence. He explained that the coaching staff repeatedly puts players in high-pressure situations during training.

Watson also sees a silver lining in the tight contests. He pointed out that while comfortable blowouts would be nice, grinding out close matches helps build team chemistry and hope. The quarterback believes these experiences will ultimately benefit the young group as the season progresses.

Big Test Ahead in Pittsburgh

The Browns now turn their attention to a tough divisional matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cleveland already defeated Pittsburgh 27-24 earlier in the season in Week 4, but history looms large over the fixture. The franchise has not won a regular-season game in Pittsburgh since October 2003, facing 22 straight losses on the road against their rivals.

With a minus-13 point differential, Cleveland enters the contest with numbers that look unusual for a team with five wins. The players and coaches understand that cleaning up early mistakes will be vital if they want to secure a smoother victory and break their long losing streak in Pittsburgh.
