Early British Pioneers

Anthony Gordon is preparing for the biggest game of his club career so far after his summer transfer from Newcastle to Barcelona. The English winger has started well at the Nou Camp with two goals and five assists in his first 11 matches across all competitions. Not many British players have played in El Clásico before.

Laurie Cunningham was the first British player to feature in the fixture. Joining Real Madrid from West Brom in 1979, he scored in a 3-2 win against Barcelona. Steve Archibald was the only Scotsman to play in the match, scoring for Barcelona in a 3-0 victory after joining from Tottenham.

Impact Forwards and Midfielders

Gary Lineker made a real impact after moving to Barcelona from Everton. He scored five times in eight Clásico matches, most notably scoring a hat-trick in a 3-2 win at the Nou Camp in January 1987. Mark Hughes also played for Barcelona in those years but failed to score in his three appearances.

Steve McManaman enjoyed a tremendous time at Real Madrid, playing seven Clásico matches and never losing. David Beckham played seven times without scoring, though he assisted twice in a 4-2 triumph during the 2004-05 season. Michael Owen scored from a Beckham assist in that same 4-2 win after coming off the bench in earlier meetings.

Recent English Stars

Gareth Bale played 15 Clásico fixtures after moving from Tottenham to Real Madrid. He scored an unforgettable Copa del Rey winner when he ran around Marc Bartra off the pitch. Jude Bellingham has already played in 10 matches at the age of 23, scoring a brace in a 2-1 win away from home during his first season.

Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United and netted a free-kick in May last season when Barcelona sealed the title. Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid from Liverpool and played his first appearance in a May 2026 match.
