Champions Stunned on the South Coast
Premier League champions Arsenal suffered a shocking defeat as Brighton and Hove Albion ended their perfect start to the season with a dominant 3-0 win. Mikel Arteta's side had been defensively brilliant before this match, but they collapsed on the south coast.
The Gunners conceded as many goals in this single match as they had in the rest of the season combined. It was a day to forget for the title holders, who looked unusually vulnerable at the back.
Gross and Kostoulas Punish Defensive Errors
The match started slowly but burst into life after thirty minutes. Pascal Gross found himself with time and space on the edge of the penalty area. Arsenal center backs Gabriel and Ezri Konsa failed to close him down, allowing the German to fire a shot off the near post of David Raya and into the net.
Just before halftime, the same defensive pairing made another mistake. Diego Gomez set up Charalampos Kostoulas, who was given too much space. The forward hit a low drive between the two center backs and into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.
Andres Completes the Rout
Arsenal hoped to mount a comeback in the second half, but Brighton put the game to bed ten minutes after the restart. Gross turned provider, sending a corner to the back post. Summer signing Chema Andres rose highest to head past Raya on his full home debut.
Arteta turned to his bench, introducing Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres to spark some life into his team. Kai Havertz had the best chance to pull a goal back when he broke clean through, but his low shot was saved by the feet of Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Historical Defeat and Table Impact
This marks the first time Arsenal have lost by three or more goals since May 2023, when they suffered an identical 3-0 defeat against Brighton.
The impressive victory lifts Brighton to third place in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, the door is now open for Manchester City, who can go three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the standings if they defeat Sunderland on Sunday.
