Brewers Make History by Naming Christian Yelich as Team Captain

A Historic Honor for Yelich

The Milwaukee Brewers have made a major decision by naming outfielder Christian Yelich as the first team captain in the history of the franchise. The club made the announcement during a team meeting on Saturday, just before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. With this new role, Yelich joins an exclusive group in Major League Baseball. He is now one of only three active captains in the majors, alongside Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals.

The 34 year old Yelich is currently playing in his ninth season with the Brewers. Manager Pat Murphy spoke highly of his player. "Everybody knows he's our captain," Murphy said. The manager added that anyone who has played with Yelich recognizes the way he upholds the standards of winning.

Respecting Club History

Before officially accepting the captaincy, Yelich made a special request. He wanted franchise legend and Hall of Famer Robin Yount to sign off on the decision first. Yount is a legendary figure in Milwaukee, having played his entire 20 year career with the Brewers. He was also the leader of the 1982 team, which is the only Brewers team to ever reach the World Series.

Manager Pat Murphy revealed that Yount agreed wholeheartedly with naming Yelich as captain. Murphy added that in Yelich's mind, Yount was always the first captain of the franchise.

Yelich, who won the National League MVP award back in 2018, was not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game. The designated hitter is currently batting .236 this season. He has also recorded 12 home runs and 58 RBIs. He has helped guide the Brewers to the National League Central division title. The team currently holds the best record in the majors and has successfully secured home field advantage for the upcoming playoffs.
