Contreras and Chourio lift Milwaukee
William Contreras hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in their National League Division Series opener on Saturday night. Jackson Chourio also hit a two-run home run for the Brewers, who won for the 16th time in 19 games. San Diego lost for only the fourth time in its past 24 outings.
The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after getting consecutive singles from Xander Bogaerts, Ethan Salas, and Luis Campusano, followed by an RBI grounder. Chourio answered in the third inning with a 420-foot drive over the wall in left-center field. Contreras then broke the tie in the seventh inning with a 406-foot shot off Adrian Morejon.
Strange roof play seals the win
The game ended in dramatic fashion in the ninth inning. With a runner on first and one out, San Diego batter Ty France hit a towering fly ball that struck a railing on the American Family Field roof before Jackson Chourio caught it in fair territory on the left-field warning track. Under ground rules, any batted ball striking the roof in fair territory is a live ball that can be caught for an out. The catch retired France, and the Padres unsuccessfully challenged the call.
Padres manager Craig Stammen said it was an unfortunate, bad break. Trevor Megill then worked around a leadoff single to secure the save. San Diego missed several other scoring chances, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning and stranding runners in the eighth.
