Friday Meeting in Santa Clara

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk met with team officials on Friday afternoon to work on a path toward ending his time with the franchise. He arrived at the team offices alongside his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Aiyuk spoke to local reporters for the first time since injuring his knee in October 2024. He stated, "I'm feeling great, feeling healthy." He added, "It was a long recovery process, a long rehab process, but I'm back to 100% and looking to get reinstated to the National Football League."

Rosenhaus noted that Aiyuk is ready to work again. He added that they have no public comment on where Aiyuk will play next, keeping those discussions private between themselves and the team.

Injuries and Financial Issues

Aiyuk has not played an NFL game since October 20, 2024, when he tore the ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Problems grew in July 2025 when the 49ers voided roughly 27 million dollars in remaining guarantees because Aiyuk missed rehab check ins. He then stopped attending team activities and was placed on the reserve left team list in December. He missed the entire offseason program and training camp.

To play again, Aiyuk must be reinstated by the league. He filed for reinstatement in late October with Rosenhaus. However, the league notified him this week that he must repay about 13 million dollars in bonus money before he can be reinstated.

Future Options and Shanahan Reaction

If an agreement is reached and Aiyuk is reinstated, San Francisco has three main choices. They could release him, which is viewed as the most likely outcome. They could also trade him before the deadline on Tuesday, which has been the team preference despite finding no trade partners so far.

The final option is putting him on the active 53 man roster. General manager John Lynch said in January that Aiyuk had played his last snaps for the team, making that scenario unlikely.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan did not attend the Friday meeting. Shanahan stated at a news conference earlier that day that he could not care less about what happens in the meeting. He added, "It's been over for our football team for a long time." Shanahan explained that anything with zero connection to the football team gets zero thoughts from him during the season.
