Playoff Exit Sparks Debate

The Boston Red Sox were eliminated from the postseason by the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card Series for the second consecutive year. After the defeat, several players questioned the role of analytics in in-game choices.

First baseman Willson Contreras spoke out after the team pulled starting pitchers in the fifth inning of close games. The Red Sox were outscored 18-2 overall in those moments.

Front Office Response

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Chad Tracy addressed the concerns on Monday. They stated there is no franchise-wide directive dictating how analytics must be used on or off the field.

Breslow defended the importance of scouts in the organization. He stated that the value of scouts is not diminished and is not going away.

Managerial Decisions

Manager Chad Tracy faced scrutiny after removing starting pitchers early in games against the Yankees. Sonny Gray was removed after 4 and two thirds innings in Game 2, and rookie Payton Tolle was pulled after 4 and two thirds innings in the opener.

Tracy stated that the decisions belong to him. He noted that nobody from the front office scripted a game or forced him to use specific numbers for in-game choices.

Player Talks and Injuries

Tracy met for multiple hours with Willson Contreras to discuss his comments. Tracy noted they have a very good working relationship.

In addition, Roman Anthony sustained a right hand injury during the series opener and left the roster. Breslow stated that rest is likely the best path to recovery and surgical intervention is not currently needed.
