New deal for the guard
Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension. The deal also includes a mutual option in the 2029-30 season.
Representatives Austin Brown and Max Saidman shared the news on Tuesday. Pritchard is a 2024 NBA champion and the 2025 Sixth Man of the Year.
Stepping up on the court
The 6-foot-1 guard cashes in on a fully guaranteed two-year max extension. He stays a key long-term member of the retooled Celtics.
Last season, Pritchard averaged career highs in points with 17, assists with 5.2, and rebounds with 3.9. He started 50 games and helped ease the loss of Jayson Tatum by taking an increased role in the offense.
Pritchard is 28 years old. His touches per game jumped from 51.8 in the 2024-25 season to nearly 70 last season. He is one of four players to make at least 200 3-pointers in multiple seasons in Celtics history, joining Tatum, Derrick White, and Antoine Walker.
Durability and options
The mutual option for Pritchard and the Celtics allows either side to opt in for the final season in 2029-30. This also opens the window for extension talks that summer.
Pritchard has shown great durability over his six NBA seasons. He has played 241 games over the last three years, which ties for the third-most in the league during that span.
