The Incident on Sunday
Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson faces a one-game suspension without pay from the NFL. Cameras caught him spitting toward Las Vegas Raiders players during Sunday's game. The league stated that this action violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, covering acts contrary to sportsmanship.
Referee Shawn Smith explained through a pool report that umpire Tra Blake witnessed Gardner-Johnson spit toward Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. That action triggered his immediate ejection from the match shortly before halftime. The game finished with a 33-30 victory for the Bills.
Upcoming Match and Possible Appeal
Gardner-Johnson will miss the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens, assuming he does not appeal the decision. The Buffalo Bills currently have a bye this week. If he decides to appeal, the case will be heard by Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash. These individuals are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL and the NFL Players Association.
Apologies and Team Reactions
Gardner-Johnson apologized to his teammates after the match. He mentioned that he needed to be a better veteran moving forward. He also posted a formal apology on social media directed at his opponent, teammates, and the organization, noting that his gesture was inappropriate and unnecessary.
Bills coach Joe Brady requested that Gardner-Johnson apologize for the incident. Quarterback Josh Allen told reporters that he was still unclear about what happened. He added that the team captains will review the footage together to decide if they need to address it further.
