A costly preseason injury

The Philadelphia 76ers received terrible news on Tuesday when an MRI confirmed that backup center Ariel Hukporti suffered a torn right Achilles tendon. The injury happened during the team preseason opener on Monday.

Hukporti, a twenty four year old big man from Germany, signed a one year contract with Philadelphia in July. He previously won a championship with the New York Knicks. The team announced that he will undergo surgery on Tuesday.

Roster pressure and other injuries

The Sixers face a tough situation regarding their frontcourt depth. The team can apply for a Disabled Player Exception worth one point seven million dollars, but they are only one point eight million dollars below the first apron. This means they cannot sign a replacement without making a trade or waiving someone, though they do have an open two way spot.

Other players are also dealing with injuries. Tacko Fall is sidelined with a left hip strain and Adem Bona has missed training camp with a left foot sprain. Joel Embiid, Dean Wade, Dominick Barlow, and Jabari Walker remain as the other frontcourt options ahead of the regular season opener against the Knicks on October twenty.
