An unusual start

The Chicago Bears tried something different on Sunday against the New York Jets. Both Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum started the game at quarterback.

On the very first play, Keenum lined up in the shotgun and handed the ball to running back D'Andre Swift for a 2-yard gain while Bagent lined up wide. Keenum left the field right after that play.

Coach explains the plan

Coach Ben Johnson did not name a starter before the game because Caleb Williams was out with a hamstring injury. Johnson called Keenum's appearance a ceremonial first pitch and a way of handing off the torch.

Johnson wanted to get Keenum out there because he heard memos about Bagent starting before any official announcement was made. Elias Sports Bureau officially credited Keenum with the win.

Bagent takes over

After the opening play, Bagent took over and played the rest of the game. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards and one interception in a 23-12 victory.

Johnson praised Bagent for being efficient and said he earned the right to be the number two quarterback. The team dominated time of possession and ran 89 plays during the match.
