Bears Offense Explodes for 59 Points
The Chicago Bears started their season with an incredible offensive display, beating the Carolina Panthers 59-37. It was a historic opener, with both teams combining for 96 points, which is the most ever in a season opening game. Chicago racked up 552 yards of offense, their third highest total in a game since 1966.
Bears offensive coordinator Ben Johnson previously stated his goal of making this the highest scoring offense in NFL history, and this performance backed up his claims. Five different Bears players scored touchdowns during the game.
Top Performers and Areas to Improve
Running back D'Andre Swift led the rushing attack with 124 yards and three touchdowns. Kyle Monangai added another 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Quarterback Caleb Williams completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for two scores.
Despite the massive win, players and coaches feel they have a lot to clean up. The Bears committed 12 penalties and fumbled on their opening drive. Defensively, they allowed the Panthers to gain 478 yards. Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns against them.
Panthers Defense Left in Shock
The Panthers defense struggled heavily, especially against the run. They allowed 291 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. This comes after Carolina spent heavily in the offseason, signing Jaelan Phillips for 120 million dollars over four years and Devin Lloyd for 42 million dollars over three years.
Phillips admitted that conceding 59 points was embarrassing but hoped it would spark urgency for the team to make corrections. Panthers coach Dave Canales said he needs to watch the film to find solutions for the defensive struggles.
