Monangai Ruled Out

The Bears will play without running back Kyle Monangai against the New England Patriots in Week 7. Monangai did not participate in any walk-throughs ahead of the Thursday night game at Soldier Field. He will miss his third consecutive game because of turf toe and thumb injuries.

Coach Ben Johnson explained that Monangai's toe injury proved to be a bigger deal than initially expected. That led to a visit with a specialist for further evaluation. Johnson previously stated that the absence should not exceed four games, which is the required absence length for an injured reserve designation.

Impact on the Chicago Offense

Chicago leads the NFL with 161 rushing yards per game. However, the team has been held below 100 rushing yards in consecutive games while Monangai has been sidelined.

Monangai is averaging 5.4 yards per rush, ranking fourth in the NFL. The Bears averaged 6.8 yards per play when he was on the field, but that number dropped to 4.7 without him. He produced a career high 30 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 4 win over the Jets. He suffered a thumb injury late in that game, and the toe injury emerged the following week. Meanwhile, the Patriots have held opponents under 100 rushing yards in five of their six games this season.
