Transfer Pursuit Over
Barcelona sporting director Deco has confirmed that the club has ended its pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. The Spanish giants tried to sign the Argentina international during the summer transfer window but failed to secure a deal. Barcelona made an official offer of over 100 million euros for the striker, but their league rivals refused to negotiate.
"Julian Alvarez is the past," Deco said at the Portugal Football Summit. "Barcelona now have to look forward. It wasn't possible in the end. We made an offer. Atletico said they would not transfer him and we had to look for other solutions." Deco added that he hopes things go well for Alvarez at his current club.
Financial Limits and Raphinha Form
Barcelona treasurer Ferran Olive explained that LaLiga spending rules prevent the club from making a big move in January without player departures. Olive confirmed that the club has a small spending cap excess of around 3 million to 4 million euros, which only allows for a small deal. He stated that a move for Alvarez would not fit their finances right now.
Barcelona signed Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal late in the summer window, but it is Raphinha who has filled the void up front. Following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the Brazilian winger has been converted into a striker. Raphinha has scored 14 goals in eight appearances this season, which has reduced the club's need to sign another forward.
Alvarez Struggles at Atletico
Alvarez is currently facing a difficult situation at Atletico Madrid. The 26 year old forward publicly revealed his desire to leave the club this summer. This decision upset the Atletico fans, who jeered him during a home match against Villarreal in August.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024. He has struggled to get into the starting lineup this season. He has made only four appearances and started just one game, after previously being a regular during his first two campaigns.
