Ravens expect extra intensity from former coach
The Baltimore Ravens are getting ready to face their former offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Sunday. Monken is now the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He claimed this week that there are no extra emotions going into this match.
Baltimore players do not quite buy that. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey said he expects Monken will want to kick their tail. Running back Derrick Henry added that Monken talks a lot of trash to his team and definitely wants to beat Baltimore.
Monken left the Ravens nine months ago after three seasons. His departure came after a disappointing 8-9 season where the offense dropped to the middle of the league. Baltimore averaged 311.8 yards per game, which was its lowest mark in eight years.
Mutual respect despite a rocky end
Despite a tough finish, Monken had success in Baltimore earlier. He helped quarterback Lamar Jackson win an MVP award in 2023. The next season, Monken led the offense to a top ranking in the league. Jackson is not expected to play on Sunday because of an ankle injury.
Wide receiver Rashod Bateman felt Monken left on good terms. Monken even helped Baltimore hire their new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle. Doyle called Monken for advice before taking the job, and Monken advised him to accept it.
Ravens coach Jesse Minter thinks both sides knowing each other is overblown and does not give either team an advantage. Monken also said his focus is simply on helping Cleveland play winning football.
