Blow for Ravens Offensive Line
The Baltimore Ravens have suffered a major blow as starting center Jovaughn Gwyn is expected to miss two to three months. Gwyn suffered a fractured fibula that will likely require surgery. The injury happened during the Ravens 34-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro, which was the first NFL game played in that city. Gwyn had to be carted off the field during the game.
This is Gwyn's first year as a starter in his four-year career. The 27-year-old won the starting job during training camp after beating out Ethan Pocic. Gwyn was a seventh-round pick in 2023 and played his first three seasons as a reserve with the Atlanta Falcons.
Crisis at the Center Position
The Ravens are facing a serious crisis at the center position. Backup center Ethan Pocic is also out with a knee injury. Earlier in August, Danny Pinter suffered a season-ending knee injury just as he looked set to win the starting job. These injuries follow the departure of three-time Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum, who signed a three-year, 81 million dollar contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in March.
With options limited, Ravens coach Jesse Minter announced on Monday that rookie Olaivavega Ioane will prepare to start at center for Sunday's game. Ioane was the number 14 pick in this year's draft and has started the first three games of the season at right guard.
Looking for Reinforcements
To address the sudden lack of depth, Baltimore has already started looking for offensive line help. The team held workouts on Tuesday for centers Graham Glasgow and Kingsley Eguakun, as well as guard Kyle Hergel. The front office is working quickly to find cover for their depleted line before the upcoming game against Tennessee.
