A Tough Stretch
The Baltimore Ravens have dropped three straight games and lost star quarterback Lamar Jackson indefinitely. Jackson is expected to go on injured reserve with a right thumb injury he suffered in a 36-10 loss at the Buffalo Bills. To make matters worse, top backup Tyler Huntley is out for the season with turf toe.
Baltimore sits at a 4-4 record and occupies last place in the AFC North. Despite the injuries and a downward spiral, general manager Eric DeCosta decided against punting on the final nine games of the season. Instead, the team is finalizing a trade for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
Desperate Times At Quarterback
The quarterback room in Baltimore has reached a critical point. The Ravens are starting undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano for a Thursday night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars while he practices with a brace on his injured right ankle.
Baltimore's other two active quarterbacks are Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed, both signed within a three day span. Fagnano, Slovis and Reed have combined for zero previous starts, 23 total pass attempts and zero touchdown passes.
Looking For Stability
Brissett brings 11 seasons of experience to Baltimore. The 33 year old quarterback has thrown 86 career touchdowns, which offers hope for an offense that has been held to 14 points or less in three straight games.
Brissett was available because the Cardinals benched him and dropped him to the third spot on their depth chart. Baltimore also has some familiarity with him because Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork worked with Brissett in Arizona last season.
Even with the addition of Brissett, the Ravens face a difficult challenge. Brissett holds a career record of 23-50, and the team historically struggles to win games when Jackson is not the starting quarterback.
