Orioles Make Choice on Robert Option

The Baltimore Orioles have officially decided against picking up the 20 million dollar club option for outfielder Luis Robert Jr. for the 2027 season.

This decision stops any long term obligation to the outfielder beyond his current terms. It follows a very short period in Baltimore where the player was unable to make a big impact on the field.

Financial Details and Recent Trades

Baltimore originally added Robert to their roster when they claimed him off waivers from the New York Mets on August 31.

When taking him from the Mets, the Orioles took on an obligation of roughly 4.9 million dollars. This total was made up of the remaining part of his salary for this year, along with a 2 million dollar buyout associated with the 2027 option.

Robert had already moved between clubs recently. The Chicago White Sox picked up his 20 million dollar option for 2026 before trading him to the Mets during the last offseason.

Injury Problems and Season Performance

Things did not go smoothly after Robert arrived in Baltimore. He managed to play in only three games for the Orioles before he was sidelined by injury. Hamstring issues forced him onto the injured list, cutting his time on the field short.

He has spent time trying to regain the strong form that earned him All Star honors back in 2023. However, his overall numbers this year fell short of those heights.

During this year, Robert played in a total of 61 games. He recorded a .221 batting average, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 26 RBIs across those appearances.

Further Roster Adjustments Announced

Alongside the decision on Robert, Baltimore announced several other player moves on Saturday.

Right handed pitcher Albert Suarez and infielder Jose Barrero both cleared waivers. Following that process, both players elected to become free agents.

In addition, right handed pitcher Codi Heuer accepted an outright assignment to Triple A Norfolk. Right handed pitcher Colin Selby was also assigned to Triple A Norfolk as part of the team changes.
