Injury timeline and medical update
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is facing a spell on the sidelines of three to six weeks. Head coach Todd Bowles stated that missing three weeks is the best case scenario for the team. Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb, which required stitches to close a wound.
An MRI taken on Monday showed no further damage to the ligaments or tendons. The team hopes the recovery time stays closer to three weeks, though internal worries point toward a five to six week absence. The exact return date depends on how quickly Mayfield can comfortably grip a football again. Surgery is not required for the injury.
Rookie steps up as starter
With Mayfield out of action, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will step into the starting role. He becomes the first rookie quarterback to start a game this season. Daniels won the backup job in training camp over Jake Browning.
Easton Stick will serve as the backup quarterback for the upcoming fixture. The team also added veteran Brett Rypien to the practice squad. Head coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence that Daniels will perform well with the support of his teammates.
