Penix targeting Week 3 return
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback situation is starting to clear up. Michael Penix Jr. is close to returning from a torn ACL that kept him out of the first two games of the season. The team preferred starter could make his 2026 debut on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers.
Penix has already been splitting practice reps with the team other quarterbacks to prepare for the quick turnaround. Observers say he has looked impressive in practice. If Penix cannot make it back for Thursday, he will have extra time to recover before the team plays the New Orleans Saints on Monday, October 5.
Current quarterback options
For Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, Cooper Rush will get his second straight start. Rush struggled in the season opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that undrafted rookie Jack Strand will serve as the backup quarterback on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa is recovering from an oblique injury suffered before Week 1. He is listed as doubtful for the Panthers game but is expected to return to practice next week. Tagovailoa, who signed a one year contract worth 1.2 million dollars, could be active on Thursday as well. The team does not plan to release him, though he could become a trade target before the November 10 deadline if he plays well.
