Arsenal Extend Lead At Top

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged his team to stop trying to score the perfect goal following a tight 1-0 win against Hull City on Saturday. The Gunners had a tough time breaking down a stubborn defense before captain Martin Ødegaard netted the winning goal from close range in the 72nd minute.

The result puts Arsenal six points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The team equalled their best start to a campaign by taking nine wins from their opening ten games. They received another boost later in the day when Manchester City suffered a defeat against Nottingham Forest.

Focus On Efficiency

Arteta remains focused on getting further improvements from his players after the upcoming international break. Arsenal have already won eight matches across all competitions by a single goal margin this season.

Arteta explained that his players missed clear opportunities during the game. He pointed out two one on one situations against the keeper, blocked shots, deflected efforts, and a bouncing ball inside the box. He stated that the team needs to be much more pragmatic and chaotic against teams that defend deep. He believes scoring earlier would open up games and make the scoreline reflect their dominance.

Penalty Dispute In First Half

The match included a controversial moment during the first half when Hull defender Nobel Mendy pulled Kai Havertz's shirt inside the penalty box. Referee Farai Hallam went to the pitchside monitor to check the play. Hallam agreed that Havertz was fouled, but he gave Hull a free kick due to an offside position.

The rules state that a player is not offside until challenging an opponent for the ball. Similar incidents in the past have led to different decisions by match officials.

Arteta Baffled By VAR Decision

Arteta admitted after the match that he was confused by the ruling. He revealed that club analyst Ben Chadwick told him from the stands that it was a clear penalty.

Arteta explained that he heard the decision was based on Havertz's starting position. He added that he expects refereeing authorities to explain the interpretation so everyone can understand how the decision was made.
