Playoff Heartbreak for Arizona
The Arizona Diamondbacks have missed out on the playoffs yet again, leaving manager Torey Lovullo unsure about his future with the team. Arizona finished the season with an 86-76 record but failed to secure the final National League wild card spot.
The team needed to win their final game against the San Diego Padres and hoped the Philadelphia Phillies would lose. However, the Phillies won their game 4-0 against the Tampa Bay Rays, which ended Arizona's postseason hopes. Lovullo admitted it was painful to watch the scoreboard update during the game.
Lovullo is the most successful manager in the history of the Diamondbacks, with a record of 750-768 over ten years. Despite this history, he finished the current season on a one year contract.
Lovullo Wants to Feel Wanted
When asked about his future and whether he would sign another short term deal, Lovullo expressed some doubt. He stated that he wants to win a world championship with the organization but added that he wants to be wanted.
Lovullo became highly emotional after the final game in San Diego. He explained that he loves Arizona and considers it his home. He enjoys working with the fans, the players, and the management, and he does not want that to change.
However, Lovullo previously admitted that he believed his coaching staff needed to reach the postseason to guarantee their return for the next season. The Diamondbacks have now missed the playoffs in eight of the last nine years, with their 2023 run to the World Series being the only exception.
A Tough Division Challenge
The Diamondbacks face tough competition in the National League West division. They have to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won 13 of the last 14 division titles, and the San Diego Padres, who have reached the playoffs five times in the last seven years.
Arizona president Derrick Hall praised Lovullo, saying he did the best managing job of his career this season. The team had to deal with significant injuries and distractions throughout the season, including the absence of star player Ketel Marte.
Lovullo said he tried to focus entirely on the players during the final weeks of the season rather than his own contract situation. He noted that he has some decisions to make and will have to think about his next steps.
