A dream move to Spain

Anthony Gordon dreamed of playing for Barcelona when he was a child growing up in Merseyside. That dream became reality when the Spanish giants signed the winger from Newcastle United for an initial 70 million Euros in the summer.

The 25 year old English winger has quickly settled into Spanish football. He is already a regular starter for manager Hansi Flick, forming an attacking line alongside Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Gordon recently started in Barcelona's Champions League win against Aston Villa and their top match against Atletico Madrid.

Proving his worth on the big stage

Gordon had a mixed path in English football. He faced relegation battles with boyhood club Everton and spent time on loan at Preston North End in 2021. Even at Newcastle, he went from January 25, 2025, to December 2, 2025, without a league goal or assist.

Despite those challenges, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe helped him develop into a top player. Gordon finished the 2023 to 2024 season as Newcastle's player of the season. Defender Maxime Esteve recalled telling teammates how sharp Gordon was after Newcastle beat Burnley 2-1. Last season, Gordon scored 16 times, including 10 goals in the Champions League. Four of those goals came in a 6-1 win against Qarabag.

Earning respect in Europe

Gordon mentioned earlier this season that people were starting to appreciate his quality and football intelligence. He later clarified that he did not mean people judged him negatively in England. Instead, he felt he was never used in a tactical system that highlighted his strengths until now.

Former manager Jose Mourinho praised Gordon after a 3-0 win over Benfica in October 2025, telling him he was too much to handle. European observers often felt his attacking style was suited for Spanish football rather than the physical Premier League.

The ideal fit for Hansi Flick

Barcelona selected Gordon over other options, including activating a 30 million Euro clause for Marcus Rashford. Barcelona sporting director Deco noted that the team needed more energy in attack when Raphinha was sidelined.

Flick wants attackers who work hard defensively, press high, and win the ball back. Gordon's selflessness makes him a great team player. Club sources have compared his role at Barcelona to that of former forward Pedro, who complemented stars like Lionel Messi, David Villa, and Neymar.
