Historic performance on opening night

Anthony Edwards put on a massive show on Wednesday night as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Miami Heat 131-106. The star guard scored 45 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists in just over 33 minutes on the court.

He was hot from deep. Edwards made nine 3 point shots out of 17 attempts. That was one more than the entire Miami Heat team managed, as they hit eight out of 33 from distance. Overall, he finished 16 of 29 from the field.

This performance put Edwards alongside NBA legends. Only three players in the 81 year history of the league have scored 40 or more points in a season opener more than once. Wilt Chamberlain did it four times from 1959 through 1962. Michael Jordan achieved it in 1986, 1989, and 1995. Edwards had scored 41 points on opening night last year against Portland, and now he has joined that short list. Sitting at his locker after the game, Edwards smiled and called the achievement fire.

Trash talk and family motivation

Edwards broke down his scoring steadily across the night. He had 12 points in the first quarter, nine in the second, 15 in the third, and nine in the fourth. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch praised his mindset, saying Edwards has always embraced the big moments.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra noted that his team got tested. Edwards revealed that trash talk from an unknown Miami bench player gave him extra energy. He said the player was talking crazy, which pushed him to play with super high intensity.

Family support played a role as well. His wife sent him a picture of his daughter awake past her bedtime to watch the game. Edwards said that meant a little more to him.
