Honest Play and Referee Decisions
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has asked if his squad is too honest on the pitch following their recent 1-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal. The match sparked debate after Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber pulled Alexander Isak back inside the penalty box at Anfield without a penalty being awarded.
Data from Opta shows that 58% of all fouls in Liverpool matches this season have been called against them. This is the highest percentage recorded for any club in the top division.
Speaking on the situation, Iraola explained that the referee congratulated the team after the Arsenal match for good behaviour. However, Iraola admitted he was unsure how to feel about that praise. He stressed that any complaints from his players must be genuine, while noting a massive gap in the balance of fouls given for and against his team.
Handling Consecutive Defeats
The loss to Arsenal was followed by a 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League. This marks the first time Liverpool have suffered two losses in a row since Iraola took charge.
Former player Dirk Kuyt called the Fenerbahce win another miracle in Istanbul, while Liverpool felt they conceded cheap and messy goals. Bradley Barcola also noted that he does not feel Liverpool pressure, stating he is not Mohamed Salah.
Iraola mentioned that everyone at the club feels angry after losing, but he urged supporters and staff to keep proper perspective. He pointed out that every team experiences ups and downs during a season.
Looking Ahead to Crystal Palace
Liverpool will try to bounce back when they visit Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace on Sunday. Iraola acknowledged that fans naturally start to doubt the team when results turn negative.
He insisted the squad is not as bad as recent results suggest, just as they were not as good as they looked during their winning run before the Arsenal game.
The manager highlighted the need to fix defensive mistakes, particularly goals conceded from set plays. He remains confident that his players are still doing plenty of good things on the training pitch and in matches.
