Herrera speaks on lost title
Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes financial rule breaches by Manchester City cost him a Premier League title. The Spaniard, who now plays for Real Zaragoza, spent five years at Old Trafford between 2014 and 2019. He won four trophies with United, but never won the league.
Speaking on the Mario Suárez podcast, the 37 year old explained that winning a Premier League title changes everything. Manchester City were found guilty last month on almost all of over 100 charges covering 2009 to 2018. There are now calls for City to lose three titles won during that nine year period.
Mourinho warnings and ticket differences
During the 2017 and 2018 season, United finished second under Jose Mourinho, 19 points behind City. Herrera recalled Mourinho saying at the time that finishing second deserved huge credit due to events behind the scenes. Herrera joked that Mourinho is like The Simpsons because whatever he says comes true.
Herrera also pointed out the contrast between the two clubs in Manchester. He recalled friends who could not get tickets for Old Trafford, while tickets for the Etihad were being given away for free. He added that City spent money like a big club despite not having the fan base.
Calls for strong punishment
Herrera sympathises with Pep Guardiola and the City squad, saying the players deserve full credit for their achievements. However, he insisted they should be angry at club officials for casting doubt on their work.
Agreeing with former teammate Wayne Rooney, Herrera said any punishment must set a strong precedent. He stated that clubs should face relegation if they illegally inflate revenue. He noted that Nottingham Forest received a four point penalty in the 2022 and 2023 season, while Everton received a ten point penalty in the 2021 and 2022 season. He also highlighted Tottenham missing out on the Champions League after finishing fifth three years in a row.
