Tough day at Stamford Bridge

Tottenham earned a 2-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Spurs entered the match having won just one league game at Chelsea in 33 seasons. However, the visitors controlled long spells of the match before Chelsea finished with ten men.

Chelsea were without injured attacker Joao Pedro, and the team struggled in attack without him. Alonso confirmed that Pedro felt an issue and will undergo tests to determine the severity of the injury. The loss halts Chelsea's momentum following recent victories over Bournemouth and Everton. Tottenham also suffered an injury blow during the game when James Maddison was forced off.

Key errors cost the Blues

The match changed late in the second half. Replacement goalkeeper Mike Penders made his first league start for Chelsea because Emiliano Martinez was injured. In the 77th minute, Penders punched a Tottenham corner into his own net to give the visitors the lead.

Cole Palmer was sent off three minutes later after receiving two yellow cards. His first card was for a push on Mateus Fernandes, which Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi felt deserved a straight red. Palmer then got a second booking for a late tackle on Conor Gallagher. Mathys Tel scored Tottenham's second goal in the 87th minute to secure the result.

Alonso defends his squad

After the final whistle, Xabi Alonso protected his young goalkeeper. Alonso stated that the squad wins and loses together and emphasized that overcoming mistakes is part of football. He said the club will support Penders, adding that the keeper will learn from the experience.

Alonso also addressed the red card for Palmer. He admitted that the decision was likely correct and stressed the importance of remaining calm after conceding. Alonso believes Palmer will learn from the mistake as the team grows.
